Jerry's Artarama is an art supply store that has really great deals when you catch them! They have sales at least once or twice a week. Until 3/09 they have canvas on sale, and some reasonably-priced oil paints. With this sale they have SoHo Urban Artist oil paint tubes starting at $2.99! I haven't tried this brand yet, but at that price, you really can't lose! Here's the link: Jerry's Artarama Sale

Material List (for beginning) oil painting:

11" x 14" is a good size canvas, I recommend buying in bulk

Medium - Linseed Oil or Liquin

Solvent - Odorless Paint thinner such as Mona Lisa brand, or Turpenoid. Lavender Spike Oil is non-toxic and your studio will smell nice, but it's a bit pricey.

As far as colors, I would suggest a minimal palette if you're just starting out: Titanium White Yellow Ochre Light

Alizarin Crimson Sap Green French Ultramarine Blue Raw Umber

Eventually, you might have a warm and a cool color in each color family - such as adding cadmium yellow or lemon yellow, cadmium red light, viridian, cobalt blue, burnt umber, etc.

I normally don't use black for shading, but when I do, I like a black with some color in it, such as blue black. Ivory or lamp black is warmer and can be lovely in small applications. Payne's gray is a cool gray, which also works nicely. I usually mix my oranges and purples, but if I use one on my palette, it'll be Cadmium orange and Dioxazine Purple.

This is just a basic material list. If you see something on sale or clearance, buy it and experiment! Sometimes you can find slightly used art supplies on eBay that are decent and cheap. If you've tried something you really liked, or see any good materials on sale, let us know!! 😀
